open studio

Open studio  was founded in late 2003. it is meant to be a platform and a room for development from and for artists and theorists. This concerns artistic projects and theoretical discourse alike, independent in which state of development. In an open space, Medea facilitates audio/visual, performative, literary, two- three-, and fourdimensional projects to be developed, discussed or published. Medea coordinates the financial and organisational framework as well as locations and provides existing structures and equipment. (media-lab, workspace, a library and technical resources.)
Open studio does not consist of a rigid formation of artists and theorists. There`s a core-group of  3 to 5 people for coordination, but everybody interested is welcome to participate. In weekly meetings the projects can be developed, reflected and discussed.
As an interface between active work, representation and the public, the open studio wants to stimulate exchange.
The works produced by open studio stand inside a interdisziplinary discourse. Fed by everyday-life matters and the need for artistic, methodical or philosophical analysis, the open studio permanently evaluates its methods. The flexibility inside the studio concerning the currently working artist and theorists influences the resulting projects perpetually and enables a complex developing-process. The different methods and conceptual backgrounds prove  to be constantly inspiring. A place where artist and theorists can encounter each other  in new ways and exchange experiences.
This fluctuation of needs and work-contexts is supported by the specific invitation of “artists in residence”. Open studio also looks for exchange with foreign countries by its “on tour” project.
Further there is an annual theme, that defines the discursive and artistic framework, and also is the title of the annual exhibition of the years projects. But it is also possible to organise presentations and publications outside this program.
The essential goal of our work is, to create structures and networks parallel to the current cultural activities and the institutionalised art market, to open self-organising scopes of action.
