WERNER PUNTIGAM

Freelance artist in the fields of music (improvisation & composition), performance, design, photography and conception. Playfulness and curiosity are the basics behind the hyperactivism of WERNER PUNTIGAM, "the alchemist of the sounds" (© Kleine Zeitung), to create and realize unconventional ideas and projects between acoustics and visuals. Born 1964 in Bad Radkersburg (A), he has lived in Linz since 1983 where he studied 'visual media design' at the University of Art (honors degree 1992). During this time he took part in numerous workshops with international musicians at home and abroad. Founder of groups such as MBIRATIONS, BLOW & ORDER, AFRODYNAMIX, MO' SOME BIG NOISE, FOCUSPOCUS, L'OOPS, DIE PUNTE, SOUNDSO and DANKE. Is/was also heavily involved in projects such as TÖNE AUS SICHTEN, REFLECTIONS ON TONGA MUSIC, HORNFLAKES or JOEY BARON WORKSHOP ORCHESTRA. Has also been invited several times to appear as guest musician in bands such as SIGI FINKEL & AFRICAN HEART (D/A/Senegal), STEWART SUKUMA & BAND (Mozambique) and others.

Conceptualizes and produces his own interdisciplinary projects such as the performance series TRIPTYCHON (with featured guest performers such as Tom Cora, Han Bennink, Sainkho Namtchylak, Jon Rose, Marta Binetti, Akemi Takeya and others) or TRIZEPS as well as concepts of sound and space installations, e.g. his composition cycle MO(VE)MENTS. Plays the trombone beside Bertl Mütter in the literature & music project 'für eine statarische Stimme und zwei zügellose Zugposaunisten' in collaboration with the Austrian bestseller author/essayist Josef Haslinger ('Das Vaterspiel', 'Opernball', 'Politik der Gefühle'), also solo (preferably at exhibition openings) including voice and a broad spectrum of noises. Appointed to conceive music for theater productions in Germany and Austria (Schauspielhaus Nürnberg, Landestheater Linz, Theater Phönix). Works occasionally on different projects for and with children (from making experiments on sounds to the interactive 'Die kleine Mega-Show'). Also regular collaboration with artists of differing fields such as the cinematic artist C.B. Schneider or the stage designer & performer Walter Lauterer ('Aug & Ohr-Productions') and others. Various recordings, radio, TV and video productions. Prizes and awards for acoustics and visuals. Winner of the Austrian Jazz Contest 1988, nominated for the 'Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik' 1997, winner of the 1999 Upper Austrian Culture Award for Music. Guest appearances in A, B, BG, CH, CZ, D, GB, H, I, NL, SK, SLO, SRB, YU, USA, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Japan. Since 2002/2003 he's been living for several months a year as 'artist in residence' in Maputo/MZ.

Puntigam the designer produces numerous works (graphical & design) to order and normally takes the responsibility for the covers/artwork of his own recordings. As a photographer he is currently producing various photo series such as the cycle 'inter.views' (e.g. 'inter.view/simonga' purchased for the art collection of the city of Linz) which has been presented partly in Linz, Vienna, London, Harare and elsewhere, not forgetting special sites on the Internet.
