Mongolia in the summer of 2004 – 14 years after the ideological revolution and the collapse of the USSR. “Where to go?” – Which way to take, embedded between the great power of China and Russia and affected by the intellectual and economic opening towards global flows. Five women from Austria tie up their perceptions of global developments during the shooting in Mongolia. The directors take up a reflexive approach by introducing themselves in the documenting process. Local people are involved in telling their stories and explaining, asserting and shaping their realities.

The reflexive documentary JAVJA deals with recent life realities of Mongolians 14 years after the collapse of the USSR. The focus of the film is on the impacts of globalisation on the everyday life of Mongolians whereas urban and rural regions are examined separately. A fundamental aspect of JAVJA is the specific approach in which the directors take up a reflexive attitude towards documenting and question its claim of authenticity. Local people are involved in telling their stories and explaining, asserting and shaping their realities.
