THE SMILING BUDDHAS

The Smiling Buddhas im weitesten Sinne zwischen Ambient, Illbient und gemorphten Breakbeatkonstruktionen bewegt sich dieses "digitale freejam-sideproject" von der "in love with Hong Kong Trash"-Fraktion des allseits bekannten und geschätzten Electronic-Disco-Trios Wipeout. Die um "Oberbuddha" und base records Chef Fadi Dorninger alias "Hun-Fa Di" und dem Audiobomber Alexander Jöchtel alias "Bruce Li" versammelten Smiling Buddhas produzieren live virtuelle Hong Kong-Techno-Phantasmen zwischen "Samurai-Zen", digitaler Spielzeugsucht, Cyberspace-Irrfahrten und transzendierenden Systemabstürzen, die unterschiedliche Electronica-Genres scheinbar schwerelos herumoszillieren und ineinander übergehen lassen. "Wurmlochelectronic" als abenteuerlicher Spacetrip durch die digitalen Hyperräume electronischer Musik.

"Operation Smiling Buddha war der Codename für die indische Atombombe mit einer Sprengkraft von 8 bis 13 Kilotonnen. Sie wurde am 18. Mai 1974 in einer Tiefe von 107 m auf dem Armeegelände bei Pokhran in der Wüste Thar zu Testzwecken gezündet."

I like to record real sounds with microphones of all kinds.
Glad that I am not alone in the world. Many sound-artists, researchers or field-recordists carry the same passion than I do.

Here are some links to get a little insight into this world.

Field Muzick are from the German Erzgebirge region who swing between evironmental and electronic music. Records like „music out of open windows“ - [fm01] is a compilation of various field recordists not only done for indoor listening. They motivate you to „Listen to it with windows open wide...and let your environment remix the songs!“ Marcus Obst released with „trafic tonalité“ a Cdr with relaxing streetnoise »Like a sky-coloured Sunday-morning version of Kraftwerk’s "Autobahn".« (Tocafi) while Frank Rowenta creates a sinister mediterranean summer feeling at „klänge siziliens“.

Rummage Through The Crevices - the link goes straight to an excellent field recordings section of the blog - is a weekly community radio segment (Monday Afternoons, 2SER-FM, Sydney, Australia) devoted to offbeat and outsider music, less travelled paths of global pop, interesting re-issued treasures, music-sharing activists, notable and unusual online mp3 repositories, etc. The webloggy thing is its online companion.

Dan had the same walkman than I had.
But I recorded shows from the Einstürzenden Neubauten (early days) and other bands while he did some very special recordings in the arcade.
At his page you can find a massive archive of fine recordings of Classic Arcade Videorecords.

I'm just glad I could preserve them before the the cassettes disintegrate.

One recording is from Nasca (flightstart with a Cesna), one from a coking plant in Essen (Kokerei Zollverein - see picture) and one from Bisbee, Arizona. A wild busride up the mountains.

What a crazy show: first the 110V to 220V converter exploded, after a while the mid-high cabinets stopped playing, ..... started to play again .... anyhow the audience had fun.

Laborg is a group of visualists (Alexandre Gonçalves, Charles de Oliveira, Marcelo Zaccariotto, Pablo Zurita, Yuji Added a.k.a. Baia) from Sao Paulo, Brasil who create a very analog lightperformance with fluids filmed with macro-cameras. Maybe in Europe this autumn. Do pass by.

"Es gibt keine körperliche Folter, nicht wahr? Und doch sind wir in der Hölle. Und niemand darf kommen. Niemand.
Wir werden bis ans Ende allein zusammen sein. Ist es das? ...
Der Folterknecht ist jeder von uns für die beiden anderen.“ Inès

Ein Hotelzimmer ohne Fenster, mit künstlichem Licht, in das der Kellner Inès, Estelle und Garcin bringt. Die drei sind nach ihrem Tod in diesem Raum unabänderlicher Abgeschlossenheit, in der Hölle, eingesperrt. Es gibt kein Entrinnen. Über ihr früheres Leben haben sie sich Illusionen aufgebaut. Nun spüren sie voreinander in schonungslosen Verhören die Wahrheit des anderen auf. Garcin, der sich als Held und Pazifist fühlt, ist vor dem Krieg davongelaufen. Inès hat den Mann ihrer Freundin in den Tod getrieben und ist von dieser schließlich selbst in den Tod mitgenommen worden. Estelle hat ihren Mann betrogen, ihr Kind getötet und ist an einer Lungenentzündung gestorben.

Obwohl die drei Figuren anfangs meinen, gut alleine in dem Zimmer zurechtkommen zu können, brauchen sie einander. Sie können sich nur durch den jeweils anderen wahrnehmen. Estelle braucht die Bewunderung von Inès und von Garcin, um sich die eigene Schönheit zu bestätigen. Garcin will als Held gesehen werden, erntet von den beiden Frauen jedoch nur Verachtung. Und Inès, die Lesbierin, versucht, bei Estelle zu landen und wird auch von ihr abgewiesen. Die drei quälen einander, weil sie wiederum vom anderen gequält werden. Sie sind einander ausgeliefert, und es gibt kein Entkommen. Nicht einmal töten können sie einander, denn sie sind bereits tot. So bleibt nur eines: Weitermachen – für immer!

Zur Selbstbestätigung brauchen die drei Figuren im Stück die Qual, die sie den Mitmenschen zufügen: „Die Hölle – das sind die anderen.“ Das ist Sartres verneinende Sicht auf den Existenzverlust, auf die Unfreiheit des Menschen. „Geschlossene Gesellschaft“, 1944 in Paris uraufgeführt, gilt als DAS Schlüsselstück des Existentialismus.

The guys from the Medienkunstlabor Graz take part in the Plymouth-Banjul Challange 2007, first run in 2003 and then known as the Plymouth-Dakar Challenge.
The aim of the challenge is to drive a car, costing no more than € 150 from Great Britain to The Gambia, where the car is auctioned for, or donated to, charity. To save some time and petrol we are able to start from Vienna (Austria) and join the rest of the teams somewhere in France or Spain. The whole trip takes about 7950km to complete.

R.I.P.: Die letzte Veranstaltung in der AVALON-Anderswelt!

Am FREITAG, den 22.Dezember, findet die letzte RAINBOW-PARTY in der AVALON-Anderswelt statt. Mit dem traditionellen Weihnachtsfest beendet der Kulturverein AVALON sein langjähriges Wirken im oberen Waldviertel.

Wie und warum erläutert Chris Rabl ausführlich hier.

Als Musiker / Band reißt es mir jedesmal das Herz heraus, wenn ein Veranstalter das Handtuch wirft. In diesem Fall wirft nicht der Veranstalter das Handtuch, sondern der Eigentümer des früheren Erlebnisparks "Anderswelt".

Dazu Chris: "Nur für ein Jahr kam Hoffnung auf, als der Verein in der Heidenreichsteiner Anderswelt eine neue Heimat gefunden glaubte. Aber nach nur einem Jahr wurde der Pachtvertrag nicht verlängert. Warum das im Endeffekt der Fall war, kann ich Euch nicht sagen und meine Vermutungen wie sehr manche dunklen Mächte im Hintergrund die Fäden zogen, behalte ich lieber für mich !

Der permanente Behördenkampf und die finanzielle Selbstausbeutung der letzen 10 Jahre haben mich zum Entschluss gebracht, dass ich meine Zeit netter und sinnvoller verwenden kann und der Kampf gegen Windmühlen auf die Dauer nicht befriedigend ist!

Wir haben uns immer bemüht gute, ehrliche undergroundige Kulturarbeit für Euch zu leisten, ich wünsche Euch das diejenigen die sich nun um Euch balgen werden es mit der gleichen ehrlichen, verantwortungsvollen Leidenschaft tun wie wir sie für Euch aufgebracht haben."

Wipeout verbrachten diesen Sommer einen feinen Abend im Avalon-Anderswelt mit Mauracher und Bunny Lake. Top-Sound, feines Licht und feine Menschen. Schade, R.I.P.

But I have a passion: field-recordings!

Beside my artistic activities (presented at electronically yours!) I started to publish an audio-blog presenting my little world of field recordings called bike-mike.
At bike-mike you can enjoy sound-recordings I did with binaural microphones from all over the world.

Blogr seamed to be the right tool to work with, because of the podcast abilty and the nice tools for html and photography.

Eisenvater in der Disco: Didi Bruckmayrs "A Little Warning From The Pimps"

Der Linzer Ausnahmesänger und Performer veröffentlicht ein melancholisches Album zwischen Dancefloor und kontrolliertem Amok

Einer der wenigen, über die Jahre integer wie künstlerisch aufregend gebliebenen Player der heimischen Musikszene hat, nach fast 20 Jahren im Geschäft, jetzt ein erstes Soloalbum veröffentlicht: Didi Bruckmayr, Doktor der Handelswissenschaften, Extremperfomer, Gelegenheitsschauspieler (unter anderem auch schon in einer Gilgamesch-Bearbeitung an der Wiener Burg), Ganzkörpertattooträger, Boxer und vor allem einer der außergewöhnlichsten und souveränsten Sänger, die dieses Land je gehört hat.

Angefangen hat alles Ende der 80er-Jahre mit den düsteren, im Zeichen britischer Postpunkbands wie Joy Division, Killing Joke oder Bauhaus stehenden Dead Souls daheim in Linz. Die gingen später in Bruckmayrs bis heute wesentlichste Band über. Mit den wechselnden Besetzungen der atemberaubenden und Genregrenzen zerfräsenden Industrial-, Performance-, Elektronik-, Noise-, Metal- und Splatterband Fuckhead versuchte Bruckmayr spätestens ab 1992 mit dem Debütalbum Ignorance, ausgehend von sinistren und repetitiven Rockstrukturen hin zum bisherigen künstlerischen Höhepunkt, dem 1998 erschienenen und auch international beachteten Fuckhead-Album The Male Comedy, bezüglich der Liveinszenierungen dem Wahnsinn einen Chance zu geben. Immer an der Grenzlinie zum gerade noch für alle Beteiligten Erträglichen. Das führte dank körperlicher Belastungsstudien, die auch mit schmerzhaften Dingen wie Metallhaken zu tun hatten, schon einmal in die Notaufnahme.

Viel wesentlicher aber: Beinahe als einzige Band des Landes machen sich Bruckmayr und Kollegen bis heute nicht nur ernsthafte Gedanken darüber, dass Musiker auf der Bühne nicht unbedingt aussehen sollten wie ihre eigenen Roadies. Ein Liveauftritt muss immer auch entsprechend choreographiert werden, seine Wirkungsmöglichkeiten sollten mitbedacht werden. Die verstörende Performancekunst führte Fuckhead schließlich auf Gastspielreisen bis nach Japan und Australien. Sie gastierten beim von Scott Walker kuratierten Meltdown-Festival in London (und wurden von Scott Walker auch auf dessen neuem Album The Gift gesampelt), während sich Bruckmayr in den Zeiten ohne musikalische Engagements bis heute zu Hause in Linz mit Hilfsarbeiterjobs oder als VJ bei Clubbings durchschlagen muss.

Nebenher leistet sich Didi Bruckmayr mit Wipeout eine Zweitband. Gemeinsam mit dem Linzer Urgestein Fadi Dorninger gibt Bruckmayr, so wie auch bei Fuckhead, zwar den grimmigen Eisenvater. Komödiantisch mitunter bis ins Groteske gebrochen wird Bruckmayrs martialisches Auftreten wie auch seine sonore, durchaus an Scott Walker erinnernde Poptragödenstimme durch feixende, kunstschwul kieksende und fistelnde Disco-Paraphrasen im Stile Giorgio Moroders und melancholische Electro-Balladen. Dokumentiert auf Alben wie Anthems For The Underachievers (2002) oder Black Light District Boys (2004).

Mit den 15 Songs seines Soloalbums A Little Warning From The Pimps setzt Bruckmayr jetzt genau an dieser Stelle an - und treibt seine Musik erstmals in durchaus kommerziell chancenreiche Bereiche leichter verträglicher FM4-Musik. Mit unterstützenden Musikern wie dem Wiener Elektronikveteranen Gerhard Potuznik, Clemens Haipl oder dem österreichischen Brachial-Metal-Gott Martin Schirenc von Pungent Stench entstanden so wunderbare Nachtschattengewächse, die den Melos der Pet Shop Boys ebenso kennen und schätzen wie den metallischen Amoklauf. Anspieltipps: der tränenreiche 80er-Jahre-Disco-Pop von I See Them Cry Backstage oder auch die alte Dead-Souls-Nummer Miss Biglove im Gewand eines Songs von A-ha. Tun Sie sich das bitte an! Wipeout had a lot a fun performing at the Rhiz, Vienna!

The audience was stunning, although it was extremly hot, jungle-like-humid and overcowded (sorry audience, but we love the Rhiz). Peter did a very nice job on the light-desk, Alex the same on the mixing-board and the boys on stage proved to be in excellent physical condition. Wipeout played a "hot" set longer than 90 minutes. A groovy and aggressive hybrid of disco, industrial and techno.

A live-recording of this outrageous show will be added very soon to this blog! Stay tuned!

Ein schäbiges Hotelzimmer ohne Fenster, mit künstlichem Licht, in das der Kellner Inès, Estelle und Garcin bringt. Die drei sind nach ihrem Tod in diesem Raum eingesperrt, aus dem es kein Entrinnen gibt. Über ihr früheres Leben haben sie sich Illusionen aufgebaut. Nun spüren sie voreinander in schonungslosen Verhören die Wahrheit des anderen auf. Sie quälen einander, weil sie wiederum vom anderen gequält werden. Skateboard music interface

Cobi van Tonder, author of the brilliant Ephemeral Gumboots, has been commissioned a new work for ISEA2006. The project, Skatesonic, uses the motions and sounds of skateboards and explores their inherent ambient rhythm to create music. In a way, each move translates to musical parameters and the rider ends up skating through a landscape of music (which s/he influences over time).

Skatesonic will work in both solo and group situation. The system "listens" to space through movement, which it maps out and translates into music. Each of the four boards will map to a unique sound and structural parameters, so if there are 4 riders they will be able to jam like a band. For example, Skatesonic will allow skaters to buffer through a sound file in Max, meaning that as they rolls over a certain distance it is as if they have a record needle under the board, and every inch of movement progresses the sound. The live microphone input also reveals information about the texture of surface under the board and intensity of movement. From an interview with the artist by Sylvie Parent.
